RAMO / BRANCH STAGNO NAVARRA
The Stagno Navarra branch descends from the second-born of Giuseppe and Barna Porzio: Antonio (1681), brother of Pietro (1677).
Charles the Second, King of Spain and Sicily, bestowed on Giuseppe the title of Conte di Cassandola on the 6th of January 1685, for military merit.
Antonio obtained the right from his father to wear the title of Conte di Cassandola, with all the other titles left to Pietro, the first-born. He espoused Margherita Marchese and they had a son named like Antonio’s grandfather: Giuseppe.
This Giuseppe, married with Alfonsina Calamarà, had two sons: Antonio and Giovanni. The father and the sons had particular assignments and roles among the Order of Malta.
That is why they had at least three longs journey in Malta, for what I know.
Giovanni took the vows in the Order and became “Confrate” (Confrere) : no sons, neither recognized nor bastard.
Antonio married with the last Navarra descendant: Maria Teresa Moscati Falsoni Navarra, who, last of the name, brought in dowry the title of Count of Bahria, bestowed on her father Ignazio by the Order of Malta Grand Master.
Antonio‘s descendants took therefore the last name Stagno Navarra, developing a separate branch of Stagno family, headquartered in Malta.
I have no evidence of the palazzo Stagno in Qurmi being used by them: the research could take me a very long time.
The family tree tangles even more a couple of generations after, when Giuseppe got married twice.
From the first wife Cecilia Zahra he got a daughter, Mary, and two sons: Enrico e Guglielmo. The first born Enrico got married but his son did not produce an heir.
From the second born, Guglielmo, married with Leopoldina von Nemira, we have the prosecution of the main branch still existing.
From the second wife Maria Nemiro, Giuseppe got Alfredo who decided to marry his first cousin Maria Carmela, daughter of Manfredo (Giuseppe’s brother) and Maria Teresa Micallef Rapinet.
It’s quite complicated to draw the family tree with the software I use, in fact some branches are unreadable.
That’s why I divided the Tree in two: main branch “da Guglielmo e Leopoldina” and the second “da Alfredo e Maria Carmela“.
I want to remind also that all the STAGNO family members and, consequently, STAGNO NAVARRA are Patrizi di Messina (Patricians of Messina) and Pari di Sicilia (Peers of Sicily) and therefore have the treatment of Don and Donna. [This style is an italian honorific similar to english ‘Lord’, and is only put in front of the First-name or First-name Last-name, never the Last-name alone, that is reserved for clergy.]
Two Count titles, Cassandola and Bahria, were granted to the branch, but I’ll talk about it in detail in another post.
